Order: An Order is a clinical action that has been prescribed by the patient’s provider, to be implemented or executed on the patient to treat a specific problem, and thus, is documented on the patient record.

Order Item: An Order Item is a clinical action that can be prescribed by the patient’s provider to treat a specific problem that is available to select in Touchworks- but not yet selected or prescribed, and thus, is not documented on the patient chart.

HMP Reminder (aka “Order Reminders”): A Reminder is a clinical action that is created from an Order Item (so not necessarily, and most likely, not included in the patient chart), that is added to the patient chart as a separate entity from actual Orders on the patient chart, to “remind” the provider to add this as an Order when appropriate. This can be a reoccurring reminder to order, such as a reminder to order a Hemoglobin A1C every 6 months (the “reminder to order the test” is there, but not the order itself).

There are 3 types of Reminders:

  • Order Reminder – these reminders are created from order items within the NON-Medication section of the Order Item Dictionary- that display on the user side in the ACI- Order Types sub-tabs (excluding Rx and Med Admin, which are the Medication section of the OID).
  • Med /Immun Reminder – these reminders are created from Medications or Immunizations within the Medication /Vaccine section of the Order Item Dictionary- that display on the user side in the ACI- Immunization and Med Admin tabs.
  • Free Text Reminder – these reminders are newly introduced in 11.2 and are created from a single order item called Free Text Reminder, located within the Follow-up sub section of the NON-Medication section of the Order Item Dictionary- that displays on the user side in the ACI- Order Types sub-tabs – Follow-up

Differences between Orders and Reminders:

  • Unlike an Order in the patient chart, Reminders drop off the chart completely once they are executed (or Ordered from).
  • Results can not be reported on Reminders as they can for Orders (i.e. Labs)
  • Reminders can not be Administered as Medications /Immunizations are
  • In HMP, Reminders show in the To Do column, whereas Orders show in the Incomplete column (orders are already ‘ordered’ waiting completion, reminders are waiting to be ordered, therefore are a ‘to do’).
