About FRAX

FRAX® is a sophisticated risk assessment instrument, developed by the University of Sheffield in association with the World Health Organization. It uses risk factors in addition to DXA measurements for improved fracture risk estimation. It is a useful tool to aid clinical decision making about the use of pharmacologic therapies in patients with low bone mass. The International Osteoporosis Foundation supports the maintenance and development of FRAX®.

Calculator Search/Filter Keywords

At the calculator level, eCalcs comes delivered with default keywords that can be leveraged in the "Search/Filter" field to enable Specialty or System driven calculator searching. The following calculator keywords are delivered by default for the FRAX calculator:

Specialties

  • Internal Medicine
  • Orthopedics
  • Surgery

Systems

  • Musculoskeletal

Calculator Configuration Options

Preference Name Valid Range Description
Publishing Checked / Unchecked When checked the calculator will display for users on the front end.
When unchecked, the calculator WILL NOT display for users on the front end.
Orderable Item Override (BLANK) / G-FRAX “(BLANK)” indicates that the global configuration options for Orderable Item will be used.
“G-FRAX” indicates that the calculator specific value will be used and can display the specific calculator name in the output.

Calculator Inputs

Input Mapping Type Description
Ethnicity Demographics Patient Ethnicity
Sex Demographics Patient Sex
Age Demographics Patient Age
Weight Vitals Patient’s Weight
Height Vitals Patient’s Height
Previous Fracture Problems / No Default Mappings A previous fracture in adult life occurring spontaneously, or a fracture arising from trauma which, in a healthy individual, would not have resulted in a fracture
Parental Hip Fracture Manual Input History of hip fracture in the patient’s mother or father
Smoking Status Problems Patient’s smoking status
Glucocorticoids Medications Patient is currently exposed to oral glucocorticoids or has been exposed to oral glucocorticoids for more than 3 months at a dose of prednisolone of 5mg daily or more (or equivalent doses of other glucocorticoids)
Rheumatoid Arthritis Problems Patient has a confirmed diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis
Secondary Osteoporosis Problems Patient has a disorder strongly associated with osteoporosis. These include type 1 (insulin dependent) diabetes, osteoporosis imperfect in adults, untreated long-standing hyperthyroidism or premature menopause (less than 45 years old), chronic malnutrition or malabsorption and chronic liver disease
Alcohol (3+ Per Day) Problems / No Default Mappings Patient takes 3 or more units of alcohol daily. A unit of alcohol varies slightly in different counties from 8-10g of alcohol. This is equivalent to a standard glass of beer (285ml), a single measure of spirits (30ml), a medium-sized glass of wine (120ml), or a 1 measure of an aperitif (60ml)
Femoral Neck BMD Results Femoral neck bone mineral density in g/cm^2

Ventricular Hypertrophy || Results || Whether the patient has left ventricular hypertrophy

Calculator Outputs

Output Mapping Type Description
Major Osteoporotic Fracture Result Ten year probability of major osteoporotic fracture
Hip Fracture Result Ten year probability of hip fracture
T-Score Result Bone density at femoral neck when compared to the young normal reference mean
