MAR - Medication Administration Record

Often used in a nursing home, hospital or prison, a Medication Administration Record allows you to schedule the times when a medicine should be given and then track when the medication is given. Typically in the paper world, the Medication Administration Record is a big notebook or 3-ring binder the nurse takes around the facility with them.

EMAR - Electronic Medication Administration Record

Often incorporated in an EHR and used in a nursing home, hospital or prison, the Electronic Medication Administration Record allows you to schedule the times when a medicine should be given and then track when the medication is given with a an automated timestamp. Typically in the paper world, the Medication Administration Record or MAR is a big notebook or 3-ring binder and has no reporting capability and is only as accurate as the human using it. Additionally, an EMAR can be used with bar-coding (the medications and patients are bar-coded. It addresses the 5 “rights” to reduce medication administration problems, right patient, right medicine, right dose, right time and right route.

Rx Number – prescription number that shows on printed scripts NDC – National Drug Code GPI – Generic Product Identifier

Most clients won’t use MAR. It’s only applicable when the administration of medications occur in the clinic and they need to be tracked.
