Q:

When I look at patients medication list, some medications are shown in Italics, and others are not. Why is this happening?


A:

If the brand name of a medication is selected from the ACI without selecting DAW as part of the sig and there is a generic available the system will automatically substitute the generic form. This "forced substitution" of a medication is denoted in the patient's record in italics. If the generic form of the medication is initially selected from the ACI the medication will not show in italics in the patient's chart. (see example below)
